2006 Interbreeding Project D (Deutsch) — Open Reality
Li H. Lu
Associate Professor & Director of Interbreeding Field
Tainan National University of the Arts
The Interbreeding Field is based in the South of Taiwan and is an architectural laboratory that researches the concepts of "Interbreeding" and "Interfering" and was established at the Tainan National University of the Arts in 1999. The philosophy of Interbreeding Field is to create new directions in architecture, conduct experiments and reconstruct the matrix of sensitive genes. The Interbreeding Field has been engaged in: compound construction, production, breeding, creating and developing, then atmosphere compounding.

In Taiwan, some of the major urban architectural features are illegally attics, balconies and pigeon houses that have been built on the top of the buildings and the most spectacular features are the glass container-like betel nut shops that can be found at the roadside in the cities as well as the countryside. We are interested in the gap between the low and high architecture aesthetics that interbreed in the contemporary city. Therefore, the Interbreeding Field intends to reflect on these phenomena that exist in our daily life. In order to reach this point it also means to interfere in the process of placing a settler into a new environment, or transfer a certain environment into a subordinated one within the field we created.

In Talking Cities, the major idea behind our work "Open Reality" is to explore playful ultra-utopian concepts that may lead to never-ending stories generated by the participants. One of the key ideas about space is to get "involved" and to "replace" it. We like to raise issues such as how to define the characters and scope of the space between the old and new structure. To us the space will present a new life and a fresh look at the concepts of interfering and instilling the proper atmosphere and forms. Like other works that had been created for different projects, we use mass production industrial wood materials in the "Open Reality" projects. The reason we select this wood material is because it represents simplified and warm elements, which not only explore the dignity for "object value" but also create the special atmosphere within the exciting co-context.

In this project "Open Reality", we intended to create multi-layers and theatrical space in which to explore the interactivities of watching and being watched, imaging and being experimented with, physical and spiritual memories in which the qualities that we would like to transform in the depth energy of the field, or in other words, to alter the urban territories to more sensational one.

In this project, we intended to build up a contextual relationship which lies in the formation of the sense of place. All Interbreeding Field members hope once people get involved, it may become a place to hang out that creates events and possibilities of interaction between man and environment.
